Okeover Inlet Wharf Reconstruction

Small Craft Harbours (SCH) is undertaking a project to reconstruct the timber wharf at Okeover Inlet Harbour.  The wharf allows user access to floats for vessel moorage and provides vehicle access for loading and offloading of aquaculture and fishing vessels.  The project also includes reconstruction of the floating plastic pipe breakwater that provides important shelter from northwest waves.

The wharf has suffered degradation with age and is past its useful life.  The substructure of timber bearing piles, caps and stringers have deteriorated with progressive rot and biological damage, and are past the point where further repairs can be effective.  The floating plastic pipe breakwater is also at the end of its design life and requires frequent repairs in between storm events to remain effective.

This project will reconstruct the deteriorated wharf with a new steel trestle and ramp supported by steel piling.  The ramp will provide vehicle access to a new floating concrete wharf head to allow for loading/offloading operations independent of tide level.  Work includes placement of additional rip rap shore protection where the trestle meets the existing shoreline and upgrading of the floating plastic pipe breakwater with a new floating steel pipe catamaran breakwater.  Completion of the work will ensure that this facility continues to be safe and accessible to existing and future users.  Work is anticipated to begin as early as July 2024 and is scheduled to be completed by March 2025.

Latest update

May 22, 2024 - The public comment period on the project and its potential for causing adverse effects is closed.  The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada is considering comments received to inform its determination on whether the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
