Contaminated Site Remediation: Grice Bay and McLean Point

This is the final stage of a multi year effort funded through the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan (FCSAP) in two locations in the Long Beach Unit of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve; Grice Bay parking lot and the McLean Point tank farm.
Prior to the establishment of the National Park Reserve in 1970, the McLean Point site was used by the Canadian Department of National Defence as a deep water marine loading dock to accommodate ship based transport of materials (including fuels) to provision a nearby military airbase. The parking lot at the end of Grice Bay road was the site of a small sawmill with above ground fuel storage. Residual hydrocarbon contamination was detected at both locations.
Access to McLean point is via a gravel road which may require temporary upgrades. The underground tanks will be removed to address long term site safety, a risk assessment has advised targeted excavations to reduce the amount of environmental damage and reduce the volume of materials handled. Hotspots only will be addressed in the marine intertidal zone. Contaminated materials will be removed from the site for treatment/disposal. Backfilling, or re-contouring of areas may occur, and the use of stockpiled natural organic materials will support site restoration activities. Mitigations including timing windows and sediment control measures will protect fauna (including fish) and sensitive marine aquatic resources.
