Connected Coast Network on Federal Lands - Cape Scott Lightstation and Scott Island marine National Wildlife Area

The Connected Coast Partnership was formed as a joint venture between CityWest and the Strathcona Regional District with public funding and a mandate to design, build and operate the Connected Coast subsea fibre-optic network in coastal British Columbia. The entire cable system will come ashore to connect to power infrastructure at over 159 landing sites. The fibre optic network will improve the access, capacity, affordability, and reliability of internet and other telecom services for residents in rural and remote communities. The Canadian Coast Guard requested the addition of their lifeboat and lighthouse stations across BC to enhance the emergency marine service capabilities.

 

The proposed Cape Scott Lightstation and Scott Island marine National Wildlife Area landing site for the Connected Coast fibre optic cable (the Project) is composed of two components: the fibre optic cable is designed to land within the Cape Scott Canadian Coast Guard Lightstation and the marine cable is designed to be laid on the seabed within the Scott Island marine National Wildlife Area. DFO and ECCC will be carrying out an assessment of the aforementioned sections of the Project. Works to be performed include the installation of power infrastructure and vaults, vegetation clearing, installation of conduit and split pipe, and installation of the marine cable. ECCC is a federal authority as a Scott Island Protected Marine Regulations permit is required to allow the project to proceed within the Scott Islands marine National Wildlife Area. The federal authorities intend to make a determination of whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse effects.
