Hatchet Lake First Nation Landfill Upgrades

The proposed project involves the expansion of an existing landfill through a three-phase approach to increase municipal solid waste storage capacity, as well as the closure and capping of the current landfill cell.

Scope of work includes:

  • Construction of a new waste disposal cell with an airspace capacity of approximately 65,000 m³, an estimated footprint of 120 m by 100 m, and a design waste depth of 7.0 m
  • Installation of a leachate collection and pump system, discharging to a new lagoon
  • Construction of a stormwater management pond (approximately 70 m by 70 m, 1.5 m depth, with a storage capacity of 7,450 m³)
  • Development of a landfill operator station
  • Construction of an equipment storage building
  • Designation of an area for the future temporary storage of recyclable materials
  • Installation of a main gate and perimeter fencing
  • Construction of an access roadway
  • Closure and capping of the existing landfill cell

The project will take place on federal lands within Hatchet Lake's Lac La Hache Reserve No. 220. The project site is not located within a Migratory Bird Sanctuary, National Wildlife Area, or Marine Protected Area, and no in-water works are proposed. A portion of the project will occur on previously undeveloped and undisturbed land. The project will require approximately 45,000 m² of vegetation clearing and 12,000 m² of excavation. The total footprint of the landfill expansion is approximately 12,000 m².
