2023 Maintenance Dredging Program – Public comments invited

July 12, 2023 – As part of its Project and Environmental Review process, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority must determine whether the proposed 2023 Maintenance Dredging Program located at 1995 West 1st Street in North Vancouver, BC is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this determination and a decision on whether or not to approve the proposed project, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments received will be considered public and may be posted online.  For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website. In addition, your contact information may be shared with third parties, e.g., the tenant, other relevant agencies, to help respond to your questions and inform possible mitigations.

The proposed project

PKM Canada Marine Terminal Limited Partnership proposes to conduct maintenance dredging along Berths 1 through 5 at the Vancouver Wharves facility. Dredging activities are expected to be completed over four to five weeks within the fisheries' least-risk window for the Burrard Inlet (August 16 to February 28). Dredging is required to maintain operational capacity for ship berthing.

Sediment will be removed using a clamshell dredge and dredged material will be stockpiled and dewatered at the facility. Once treated, dewatered sediment will be transported by truck and disposed of at an appropriately licensed disposal facility.

Recent maintenance dredging occurred in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2019.
